Calgary Workshop

May 13, 2016

Ever feel irritated when your colleagues or patients/clients want something from you because it’s one more thing that you just don’t have energy for?

Do you remember what is was like when you first began your career and you had so much energy and passion to help people?  Want that back?

Do you recognize the cost of caring that comes with your work, but you’re unsure how to reduce it and stay healthy in your field?

If so, you’re not alone.  I created this workshop so you can keep yourself (and your big heart) healthy while you do the amazing work you do!

What Does Compassion Fatigue Look Like?

Feeling emotionally exhausted and as though you don’t have the energy to care anymore.

Avoiding patients/clients/colleagues, missing work, withdrawing from personal activities. Numbing emotions with food/tv/alcohol/shopping/internet.

Headaches, tension, poor sleep, fatigue, appetite changes. Gastrointestinal problems. Frequent colds. Impaired Immune System.

YOUR PRESENTER

Charlene Richard, B.S.W., M.S.W.,RSW, RYT 200, Mindfulness Teacher, Compassion Fatigue Specialist

I’ve been offering Compassion Fatigue Resiliency programs since 2008 in Manitoba and Ontario, but this will be my first in Alberta!

By combining psychological/behavioural strategies, mindfulness meditation and yoga, I’ve created a holistic program to teach health care and helping professionals how to stay healthy/happy in this field.

I don’t believe in lecture style workshops where you are stuck sitting in a chair listening to me all day. Expect a variety of learning activities and move around as you need to.

Of course there will be some optional yoga and mindfulness meditation throughout the day.

Find a colleague and sign up together so you can keep the support going after the workshop!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I’m not sure if I have Compassion Fatigue or Burnout?

You will learn the difference between Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction and Burnout.  We will cover the signs and symptoms so you can see if any of them fit with what you are experiencing.  Prior to attending my first Compassion Fatigue workshop, I had no idea what it was, but 30 minutes into the presentation, I knew it was going to change my life!

Why should I have to learn how to manage Compassion Fatigue when it’s organizational issues that cause it?

The nature of most health care and helping professions is that there will always be more people in need than resources available.  This is one of the risk factors for Compassion Fatigue.  I believe that organizations have a responsibility to recognize the occupational hazards of helping professions and support their staff.  I also believe that people in the helping profession have an ethical responsibility to do what they can to stay healthy for their patients/clients.  This workshop helps professionals work within a framework of staying healthy while doing this work.

Do we get materials/handouts?

Yes, you will receive a copy of the slides and handouts

I work for Alberta Health Services/Primary Care Network but I don’t want to tell people, do I have to in order to receive the special rate?

You do not have to tell anyone where you work if you don’t want to.

Do we have to do Yoga and Mindfulness during the workshop? You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. We will go over many different strategies during the day.  I do offer both chair yoga (very gentle that anyone can do) and will offer some traditional yoga.  You will have the option to opt out of the traditional yoga and practice another form of relaxation.  Mindfulness practices will also be reviewed.  You can opt out of any strategy you don’t feel comfortable with.

Do I have to bring my yoga mat?

I will offer some traditional yoga during the day for those who want a short practice.  You will need to bring your own mat.

What do I wear to this workshop if I am practicing yoga?

Dress comfortably in loose clothing that you can move it.  You’re welcome to wear yoga pants if you’d like.

Will there be snacks/food?

There will be light healthy snacks in the morning and the afternoon.  You are free for lunch and can attend one of the many places in the Kensington area or head up to North Hill Centre.  Bring a water bottle for the water fountains.  There is a restaurant in the community centre that also has tea/coffee and food if you’d like.

What’s the parking like?

I specifically chose a location with windows and plenty of free parking in the area! If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me at info@charlenerichardrsw.com
